Big Brothers Big Sisters of London and Area

Dear Matches,

The other day a Little Brother told us that the best thing about his whole school year was having a Big Brother. The “BEST” thing about the “WHOLE” year!

I’ve been the Executive Director of our organization (Big Brothers Big Sisters of London and Area) for one month now and almost every day I hear something as remarkable as this. In my first week, two mentors wiped away tears telling me about their relationship with their mentee. A few days ago, I was the one wiping away tears watching a music video that one of our matches created together about their mentoring experience.

I am so proud to be part of this organization. I’ve worked in London’s non-profit sector for over 20 years and never have I felt the energy, collectivity and optimism that I do now about the power of a movement. And the power of two individuals coming together to create more meaning (and fun) in their lives.

You are all so extraordinary.

To the Bigs, this is just the beginning of more great things you will go on to do for our community (Thank you to the five of you who are on our board of directors).

To the Littles, just keep on being you because your Big loves you just the way you are. But watch her. Follow him. They will show you a different path and you will go on to do more great things too. There’s actually research to show this. Studies confirm that the outings you go on with your mentor every week (instead of being home alone after school) give you a better chance for a bright future.

Some of you, I know, are new to Canada. You’ve been through horrors that most of us cannot even begin to imagine. I hope your mentor is helping to make your transition here easier. Have you been to The Factory yet? (Free admission to all matches!)

To all those coming to camp soon, you will have an incredible week, but I want to apologize for the space. It’s a basement and needs a facelift. The building was Lerners’ original office (and we are so grateful to be there!) but it was never meant to be a place for running children’s programs.

We have a few ideas on how to raise money for a reno, but wouldn’t it be amazing if we were voted one of the charities to receive a portion of Lerners 90th anniversary charitable giveaway. Check it out if you haven’t heard of it.

I wish you all a happy summer full of exciting match activities—like the family bbq! Hope to see you there on August 10th!

Janet
