Community Living London: Carlos’ Story
In June 2019, Carlos hosted his 3rd annual ‘Pitch & Putt’ golf tournament! This tournament originated back in 2017 as a goal Carlos had set for himself through Community Living’s Adelaide Access to plan and host a small event for his friends. The tournament turned out to be such a success that Carlos was inspired to make it an annual event!
In the beginning, there was much to learn about planning an event, especially when the assistant Carlos chose to help him with this goal had very little knowledge or experience with the sport of golf! But Carlos is a man who appreciates the “details”, so right from the early stages of planning Carlos had a clear vision of what he wanted the participants to experience at his tournament as well as a plan for how he could use his tournament to “pay it forward” and help others in his community by donating the proceeds. Carlos is a generous and kind-hearted person whose first thought for what to do with the participant registration money was to help other people in need. He looked at all his options and chose the charities based on what is near and dear to his heart:
2017: March of Dimes (wheelchair recipients) & Epilepsy London
2018: Easter Seals Camp Eden
2019: Ronald McDonald House
His main mission was for everyone to come together to have a great time playing golf by creating a fun, yet inexpensive, event for his friends who share his love for the sport of golf, regardless of skill level.
Carlos learned quickly that there were many steps involved in planning an event and that he would need to enlist others to help with some of the tasks. He found people willing to help with creating the certificates he would hand out, someone to help with official photography, and assistance sourcing donations for prizes. This year he took the additional step of creating a letter that could be given to potential donors, and presented these letters in person. It is difficult to say “no” to Charismatic Carlos, and the prizes for his tournament poured in! Carlos kept his team on task and organized, checking in often to see how things were coming along. He extended invitations to everyone, and quickly reached the maximum number of golfers that could successfully navigate Parkside Nine.
On the day of the event, Carlos was pleased that the weather once again cooperated. He encouraged everyone, and indulged in a little bit of “smack talk” with his arch golfing rival John!
When the golfing was done, Carlos made his closing speech to thank everyone for coming. He continued his tradition of sharing how proud he was of everyone who participated, and ensured that all of the people who had any part in making his tournament a success ended the day feeling awesome! Community Living London played an integral part in helping Carlos to make his dream a reality, and the donation would help them to continue to fulfil their mission to inspire possibilities for people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
