After receiving a diagnosis of Head and Neck Cancer in 2014, our family has been dealing with different aspects of the disease with the cutting edge medical treatment of the Head and Neck oncologists at LHSC, as well as the ongoing support of the London Health Sciences Foundation supporting the head and neck cancer department at LHSC.
At the age of 41, Jeff was diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer. The initial prognosis was good, with the treatment plan of surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Once he completed these treatments, Jeff was cancer free. Unfortunately, the cancer returned a couple of years later and had moved into his jaw bone. This required an extensive surgery to remove his jaw, and was followed up again with another round of radiation. This, we thought, would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, the cancer returned again in late 2017, resulting in another surgery. And again, it returned in early 2019, resulting in yet another extensive surgery on April 29th, to remove part of his chin, tongue and entire lower lip.
Jeff just returned home after a 29 day hospital stay.
Throughout all of these setbacks and recurrences, Jeff has been able to remain positive and extremely hopeful. In fact, his sense of determination and tenacity was on full display last summer, when he participated (after only 3 months spent recovering from his surgery) in the “Head and Neck Above Cancer” 5k Charity Walk, put on annually by the London Health Sciences Foundation. He has again set a goal to participate in this year's event on August 18th.
The reason he is able to push himself to participate in that 5k Charity Walk, is because it means so much for him to be able to help raise funds for the research team, headed by Dr. Anthony Nichols, at the Head and Neck Cancer department of LHSC. This research is leading edge and has been providing important discoveries in both the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, with a world-wide impact.
Jeff is passionate about helping to fund this research, because he wants to give whatever he can, to help find prevention and treatment options for future patients.
As Jeff’s wife, I joined the committee for the “Head and Neck Above Cancer” 5k Charity Walk, in order to personally help support the fundraising efforts and Dr. Nichol’s program. The people involved with this charity group each have a different reason for joining the efforts, and they have become an incredible support for our family.
The London Health Sciences Foundation supporting the head and neck cancer department at LHSC, would be grateful for your help… and the funding for new treatment options that would benefit from your help, would renew the hope our family has for Jeff’s future.
