As a nurse I have seen patients suffering with head and neck cancer and this is what drew me to the Head and Neck Above Cancer Charity. These are not the cancers you can hide- they are visible, disfiguring, and affect the patients’ self esteem and self-image. These cancers include the mouth, tongue, jaw, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands. Patients have radically life changing surgeries and often end up with feeding tubes, disfigurements, and often are unable to eat or talk normally ever again.
This is why I got involved in the Head and Neck cancer charity at LHSC. These patients need us to care enough to formulate new treatment to enhance their quality of life. The treatments we have are not enough and we desperately need people who will dedicate their lives to helping this patient population. We are lucky enough to have one of these people here in London, Ontario! We have an amazing surgeon who has dedicated time both in and out of the operating room to do research to create innovative new treatments which will benefit these patients.
Using funds from research grants as well as from the Head and Neck Above Cancer Charity we have doctors who are dedicated to helping these patients. Dr. Anthony Nichols has developed a program that introduces his findings in the lab into the clinics by way of early stage clinical trials. He is studying the genetic make-up of head and neck squamous cell cancers to see how our genetic makeup can help predict the responses to chemotherapy.
Alongside Dr. Kevin Fung and Dr. John Yoo he established the first transoral robotic surgery program in Canada! This has made a significant impact on how these patients are treated!! In 2011 he introduced the first and only randomized clinical trial that compared the transoral surgery with radiation for the treatment of oral cancer. This study has since been up at UBC, McGill, University of Ottawa, Toronto, and Australia. We can’t do research without the help of people like you and I want you to know that you can help us effect real change by selecting the Head and Neck Above Cancer Charity to be one of the recipients of these much needed funds.
Through this charity I have been personally impacted by the resilience and dedication of these patients, families, and doctors in the head and neck cancer program. Please Help us help these patients! Pick the head and neck above cancer charity as one of your chosen charities for 2019. We are passionate about this cause and we can’t do it without you!
Thank you, Thank you for all that you do!!
