Like the tide, it comes and goes. Some days I feel like a ton of bricks, other days I feel like I could take on the world. Anxiety is an interesting beast.
When I moved to London two years ago, this beast got tougher. It was the hope of a new beginning, a new me, but the high standard I set for myself seemed to make things worse. I was starting my first ‘real job’ in a city where I had no friends.
But sometimes new friends come from the most unlikely of places.
I actually remember it well; it was just after one of my toughest days. The one where you are your own worst enemy. That night I knew I had to do something, so I looked up local volunteer opportunities.
I thought: one where I could help someone out, and maybe they could help me out in the process. And after searching for hours, I found the Humane Society London & Middlesex (HSLM).
The Humane Society here in London offers shelter, assistance, and advocacy for the surrendered, neglected, and mistreated animals in our community. Their mission will always remain the same: build and support a humane and compassionate community for all animals.
Being a dog lover and starting a career in animal health, the Humane Society seemed like a good fit. However, I felt it was just going to be short-term. A temporary fix until I found something else.
Fast forward to today - almost a year later - I can tell you, I stand corrected.
After my first shift as a dog socializing volunteer, and every Friday since, I walk out of the shelter with many new friends. Friends that need my help more than I need theirs. It humbled me instantly.
Maybe it’s our shared desire to find stability, happiness, and a place where you feel like you belong.
The Humane Society London & Middlesex works day in and day out with these animals to make sure they are properly taken care of, and have friends to lean on, until one day, they are ready for their purpose; a forever home. Something we all strive for; that I strive for.
Although they operate solely on donations, the staff and other volunteers still do everything in their power to give these animals a second-chance at happiness. It is truly remarkable.
It is for that reason, a generous donation to the Humane Society by Lerners, a fellow community champion, will allow them to continue to provide for the animals in our community that need it the most.
And for me, it was a mutual rescue.
