38 years ago, in high school, I heard an announcement on the loud speaker – a family was looking for after school care for their adult son with a disability. Having absolutely no experience, I decided I would apply and see how it went, with little expectation of being successful. I was surprised when the family hired me, but was not aware that that one risk would change my life forever. This family taught me all I needed to know to support their son and keep him safe. And the gentleman taught me all I needed to know regarding how to listen to a person who used few words to communicate – he taught me to laugh in the face of challenges – he taught me compassion and the value of relationships.
The family then encouraged me to connect with Community Living London (CLL) and to explore the Developmental Service Worker program at Fanshawe College. I did both, and got hired at CLL. 38 years ago, and I have never looked back. This organization, where I proudly work, provides support to over 1000 people with developmental disabilities in London. We Inspire Possibilities each and every day – we prove the impossible is in fact possible. And for all that we do for people that we support; they do even more in return. Each day is a new day to learn – each challenge is a new opportunity – and each person is full of possibilities. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to do what I love for almost 40 years – I am grateful to all the people I have met – I am grateful to be surrounded by over 450 incredibly committed employees who join me in our vision. Community Living London is so deserving of a donation so we can continue to Inspire Possibilities in our great community.
