On April 1st 2016, we welcomed our second child, a boy, into the world! He was born at 35 weeks 5 days, and so the NICU team was in the room for delivery. While we expected the typical signs of a preterm baby, it was clear that our son’s life was at risk and it was due to something else, a syndrome we later came to know and understand, Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome. During the weeks that our son was cared for in the Level III NICU we were fortunate to have a room at Ronald McDonald House (RMH). Until this point, I had never realized what this charity offered. I was welcomed to a home away from home, a comfortable place where myself and my visiting family could rest after a long day at the hospital. A place where I could have privacy to shed tears of worry and frustration. A place that provided 2 (and often 3) meals a day. A place where staff and volunteers would greet me late in the evening upon my return to ask how my son was doing, and listen - especially helpful when I felt so alone with the distance from my family and friends. A place for my older son to play and get out bottled energy when he visited. A place to ease the financial load that a sick baby creates (covering food, living, laundry & parking expenses.) Ronald McDonald House is a truly special place, and one that I would like to recommend for your charity giveaway. I am forever grateful for this charity's support during one of the most terrifying times in my life.
